When it is time to leave a rental home, planning ahead helps the move and final inspection run smoothly. The steps depend on your tenancy agreement, the type of tenancy and current law. Contact your property manager early if you have questions.
Check your tenancy agreement and the current Tenancy Services guidance on ending a tenancy before giving notice. Requirements and timeframes vary with the situation and type of tenancy. Put the required notice in writing, keep a copy and discuss your intended move date with your manager.
Remove your belongings, clean the home and included appliances, and care for the grounds as required by your agreement. Compare the property with the starting condition record, allowing for fair wear and tear. Tell your manager about damage or maintenance issues and discuss any cleaning or repair questions before the inspection.
Arrange return of all keys, remotes and access devices. Contact utility and internet providers about your final date, arrange mail redirection and give your manager a forwarding address and contact details.
The bond is held by Tenancy Services. Once the tenancy has ended, the parties can discuss the property’s condition, outstanding rent or agreed costs, and the refund. See the current Tenancy Services bond guidance for the process and options if there is a disagreement. Do not sign a refund form you do not understand.
Speak with your property manager as soon as possible. Tenancy Services provides independent guidance and dispute-resolution information. For the Te Anau team, call 03 249 8989 or use the contact form below. You can also read your tenant journey.
